Street Projects

We have over $35 million in capital projects underway.   Recently completed projects include: the Market St. Bridge deck replacement, Quincy Avenue, Church Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and Iowa Avenue.  There is a large flood control project underway on the W. Main Street corridor that includes a significant amount of street replacement as well.

Street Maintenance

The City’s Street Maintenance crew is responsible for the daily upkeep of approximately 170 miles of streets and 60 miles of alleys.  We do light repair work like sealing street cracks and small patching.   In the winter we run the snow plows that keep our streets clear.   Using a variety of heavy equipment we work with asphalt, rock and concrete as the need requires.  Our crew cleans ditches as well as alley and driveway culverts, plus we perform minor repair and seal applications to 9 bridges.

Roundabout Intersections

The City is pursuing grant funding for creating roundabouts at the Ferry/Richmond and Albia Road/Ferry Street intersections. Roundabouts have proven to be a safer and more efficient type of intersection. Roundabouts REDUCE the types of crashes where people are seriously hurt or killed by 80% when compared to conventional stop-controlled and signalized intersections.    Click here to learn more about roundabouts in Ottumwa.

Snow Removal

Iowas annual snowfall is 32 inches. Everyone knows how even a light dusting of snow can affect driving conditions.
