The Recycling Center is Ottumwa’s “home base” for waste reduction and recycling efforts. We process all of the materials that are collected through curbside recycling collection, accept a number of materials for drop off and operate the area’s regional collection center for household hazardous wastes.
Drop It Off At The Recycling Center
We have a drop-off area for items that are not picked up at the curb. These items include used motor oil, antifreeze, automotive batteries, transmission fluid, used oil filters, textiles, hardback books and usable latex paint in quantities of 1/2 gallon or more. The Recycling Center also has a drop-off area for all of the items that are collected at the curb, including grass clippings and leaves. The Recycling Center does not accept limbs and branches. These may be taken to the Landfill at no charge.
Recycling Center Rules:
- NO dumping of trash or unacceptable items will be allowed. Persons found dumping illegal items may be fined.
- Children and pets must remain in the vehicles at all times.
- Scavenging through containers or appliance area is discouraged.
- Household hazardous waste is accepted spring – fall at the Recycling Center by appointment. Latex paint is accepted year round at the Recycling Center without an appointment.
- Plastic bags used to transport recyclables and/or yard waste need to be taken home for reuse or disposal in the trash.
- Please place all recyclables in the appropriate containers.
- Appliance disposal cost is $5.00 each.
- We are not a redemption center, We accept deposit containers, but cannot return your deposit.

Regional Collection Center – Household Hazardous Wastes
The Regional Collection Center for household hazardous waste is located at the Ottumwa/Wapello County Recycling Center. Hazardous waste is accepted by appointment only. Call the Recycling Center 641-683-0685 to schedule a drop off. This service is offered at no charge to Davis and Wapello County residential customers. Small businesses may be able to use this service as a conditionally exempt small quantity generator for a fee. Please call the Recycling Center at 641-683-0685 for information.
How do you know if you have household hazardous wastes? If it can catch fire easily, if it can explode, if it can dissolve things, or if it is poisonous then it qualifies as household hazardous waste.

The Recycling Center is happy to assist with all waste reduction efforts. Businesses that are wanting to establish recycling and waste reduction program are invited to contact the Wapello Recycling Center. The Recycling Center staff will develop a comprehensive recycling program, tailored to the individual business needs; there is not charge for developing the programs. Waste audits, employee training, educational material templates and troubleshooting assistance are also available free of charge.

Buy in bulk and economy sizes. Products purchased this way usually cost less too! Avoid products sold in individual serving containers. Choose products with the least amount of packaging.
